Bloomberg Staying Out of the Endorsement Game
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will not be endorsing anyone running in the statewide elections in New York this year, or so reports Sewell Chan over at The Empire Zone, the New York Times political blog. The mayor then said nice things about State Democrat Senator Hillary Clinton and said he has never met her opponent, even though, right now, she has two Republicans and one Democrat.
For Spencer, this is not bad news. He is running his campaign as a conservative and Bloomberg's liberalism on many issues would not jive with his positions. For K.T., it is probably a bad thing that the mayor is staying out of the race, especially in the primary. State Republicans say she is down by at least 10 to 15 points in primary polling, so any endorsement help she can get, especially from a popular New York City mayor would help. The reality for her campaign is that she needs a little boost from New York City and Mayor Mike would have provided that kick.
For Mayor Mike, he's not running for anything anymore and since the Democrats in Clinton and Spitzer are leading their respective races, why get involved?
I wonder --- we know Rudy Giuliani has taken a position on the Governor's and Attorney General's races (he's backing John Faso and Jeanine Pirro). Will Rudy be doing any kind of endorsing prior to the primary? Could he back a conservative like Spencer, who is leading the race, over a moderate like K.T., who is down right now? Just wondering...
