There are whispers in the State capitol that New York State Governor David Paterson could be gone by the end of the week.
Our source is close to seats of power in both major parties.
Enter Richard Ravitch?
Capitol Confidential reported tonight on the resignation of State Police Superintendent Harry Corbitt,
Apparently, the exit of Corbitt leaves Paterson in the investigation's line of fire.
Rick Lazio said that if the charges against Paterson are true, he has to resign.
It's only "rumors" now but News Copy was told by an Albany lobbyist close to Democrats today that Paterson is done.
Kirsten Gillibrand, who owes her U.S. Senate seat to Paterson, has now called for his resignation.
The Huffington Post noted New York's resignation watch and what could be a Richard Ravitch problem.
"... He never ran on the gubernatorial ticket, having been appointed to the post of lieutenant governor by Paterson. And while that appointment was affirmed by the Court of Appeals in the State of New York -- and would, ostensibly, be re-affirmed if challenged further -- it isn't far-fetched to assume that Republicans will attack him as illegitimate."
It's not far-fetched that fellow Democrats will attack Ravitch as illegitimate, since the legal end-run to keep either State Senate President Pro Tem Malcolm Smith or State Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada from being the next governor was as much a Republican machination.
Ravitch's authority could be challenged.
Betting pool on Paterson's exit?
Monday afternoon.
