"Being Catholic Now" by Kerry Kennedy should be required reading for all those politicians and political consultants who presume the Catholic vote is one big right wing conspiracy.
Gary Stern of The Journal News in Westchester County had the following story on Kennedy's collection of interviews of high-profile American Catholics.
It's not a left-wing conspiracy either but ...
Kennedy's whole life, as she describes it, has been shaped by a particular sense of Roman Catholicism that requires caring for the poor and oppressed and pursuing social justice, but that allows a lot of room for individuals to follow their conscience on matters of private behavior.
She's a classic liberal or progressive Catholic - a Kennedy, after all - who has limited patience for bishops and priests who condemn abortion but say little about poverty. She praises House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the scorn of many bishops because of her aggressively abortion-rights views, as an "extraordinary woman."
... Wonder if she interviewed her ex-father-in-law, former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo.
